Counselling & Psychotherapy

The way that I view therapy is that it is a journey of understanding yourself, all parts of your self, in real meaningful depth and then making use of that understanding to live in a way which fits you better. The theory is that a lot of what keeps us stuck, lost, unhappy, unfulfilled, despairing is about parts of ourselves that are neglected, mis-understood, repressed or otherwise unexpressed. Therapy is a space to learn more about ourselves and do that examination and with the insight that comes from that, as well as with the freedom that comes from expressing parts of ourselves that have been locked up, we then learn how to live better, more authentic and more meaningful lives. There are many reasons, including past or present traumas, that we may be struggling to feel like ourselves, and it is therapy's job to help you piece this together and recover ourselves.

There are many models of therapy and ways of looking at it; my “therapeutic integration” is a mix of

Relational/Psychodynamic and Existential schools of psychotherapy & counselling. Whilst it typically

looks like talking this can be different and I incorporate more creative or playful approaches when it fits

the work and the person in front of me.

For me, what’s important is that the therapy space becomes one in which you can be authentic and can look

at all aspects of yourself. It is this real examination of who we are and what is going on for us that is the

beginning of meaningful change towards a more fulfilled life. This openness requires trust which in turn

requires time. I work with clients for short and long term work but if we begin working together I ask that

you commit for at least 3 months as this typically is long enough to feel the impact of a trusting, holding

and containing relationship within the room.

In the room this will look like you leading and me helping us to both explore together, finding out what matters to you. It is not about labels or diagnoses but about gaining an understanding of how you work and, on a more fundamental level, who you are. In many ways therapy is about working together to create meaning and purpose out of where you are now and this helping to drive you towards where you want to be. It is existential work.

A first session with me is a space for us to both understand if we are a good fit and for you to talk about what it is you want therapy to do for you. You can come in with very specific goals or with a more broad sense of wanting to explore – it is important we are doing work that is getting towards something meaningful for you and this, I find, helps us stay dedicated and focused to the work.

I work online and in person. Online I tend to use Zoom and in person my room is located in Telegraph Hill, SE14, London.

I take payments by Bank Transfer or Cash, typically. We can discuss other options.

Sessions are typically at the rate of £70 per session.

I occasionally have low cost spaces available according to need. If this is something you require then get in touch. If I cannot accommodate a low cost space right now I operate a waiting list.

Who I work with

Below is a list of groups with whom I have prior experience. However, my therapy space is open to anyone aged 11 and above. While I do not assume that membership of any group defines you as an individual, many clients have found it reassuring to know that I have substantial experience working with communities that often face barriers to accessing affirming and effective therapy.

Therapy Students

I teach psychotherapy at two different settings and believe that your personal therapy is one of the biggest parts of your development as a therapist. I have worked with a range of students from different modalities and settings and I find the work to be engaging and rewarding. On occasion I have a low cost space for therapy students.

Travellers

Members of the UKs Travelling communities (Showmen, Romany Gypsies, Irish Travellers, Scottish Travellers, Boaters, New Travellers etc.) face a variety of barriers to accessing good ongoing therapy. From my own experiences and from my time working in Traveller advocacy organisations I have a good knowledge of what it means to be a Traveller in today’s world and of what barriers you may have to accessing therapy. Together we can work out a way to work together whether you live nomadically or not.

Adolescents & Children

I work privately with adolescents & children. Much of my work in and outside of therapy has been with children and adolescents both privately and within schools and charities. Adolescence is a time of profound change and is about the discovery of your self. One of the things therapy can offer is some space to help understand your developing identity and what that means for you now. Therapy does not necessarily look very different from working with adults but there are some changes in approach and there are also different legal responsibilities when working with someone under 18.

I will also typically have contact with a parent or guardian; this contact is discussed within the sessions.

LGBTQ+ Community/ GSRD Therapy

I have worked with many LGBTQ+ clients and have a strong experience and understanding of the kinds of issues that can come up for you as well as what therapy can do to help. I am also acutely aware of the harm that therapy has done in the past to some individuals and I believe it is holding this and working with this that will help us get to what you need to help you. I founded an LGBTQ+ organisation which I ran for five years, I teach on the UKs first LGBTQ+ Affirmative Counselling course and have collaborated with many large and small LGBTQ+ organisations.

Neurodiversity

Whilst this is a term with a very wide meaning it is still one that is useful. Therapy has a history of over-pathologising and being an unwelcoming space for neurodivergent individuals. To me, therapy is about meeting you where you are and working with that. This includes working with different accessibility needs and honoring your experience rather than centering a neurotypical lens.

Personality Disorder Diagnoses

Individuals with diagnoses of personality disorders can often find they are dismissed outright from therapy, labelled too difficult, or that their experiences are viewed only through the lens of their diagnosis which can lead to feelings of mistrust, resentment and being un-held. Whilst these diagnoses can be important information about how you operate, they are only one piece of the picture.
