LGBT+ Travellers today
As the founder of Traveller Pride, the UKs only group for LGBT+ Travellers, Tyler is uniquely qualified to talk about the everyday lives of LGBT+ Travellers in the UK and of their needs and challenges. Featuring case studies & personal testimonies, statistics and a timeline of the history of the LGBT+ Traveller movement, we look into the barriers and common issues faced by LGBT+ Travellers in the UK and at what you can do to understand this population better and to work better with them.
This training has been delivered to LGBT+ organisations wanting to better include Travellers, Traveller organisations wanting to better include LGBT+ people as well as to a number of more general charities. As such, there is a flexibility within this training and we can look at what your needs are within it. As this is such an emerging movement within Traveller advocacy and activism it is a training that is constantly being updated and so your suggestions for content are welcome.
The Languages of Travellers
Tyler’s first degree was in linguistics and had researched, written and given talks on this subject. Nomadic groups are a fascinating example of the development of languages and dialects and how this reflect their changing ideals and relationships with other groups. Including examples from various Traveller groups in the UK and touching on the Polari Myth, this interactive workshop explores what languages have looked like historically for Travellers, what they look like today, what we can learn about Travellers from their language use and in particular what we can learn about values and history through looking at these.
Mental Health of Showmen
Based on a talk delivered at the University of Sheffield, this explores what modern Showmen identity is today and what mental health is like currently within the Showmen community. You may not have spent much time thinking about the community who run your local funfairs, but this talk will help you see the other side of the paybox and understand what factors go contribute positively and negatively to our wellbeing. This talk is based on personal experiences, testimonies from members of the community as well as Tyler's time working for various Traveller organisations including Traveller Pride, The Showmen's Guild of Great Britain and, as a therapist, the Showmen's Mental Health Awareness Charity.
WORKSHOPS AND CREATIVE WORK
Tyler has facilitated groups and works creatively and flexibly in a way that draws people out of themselves and allows for spontaneous meaningful engagement that fits to the needs of the participants. He has facilitated discussion groups, creative arts groups, drama groups, educational groups, process groups, bereavement groups and experiential groups.
The workshops are usually very creative, playful and inclusive. The aim is to use different and unexpected methods to help us express, connect and learn about ourselves. The feedback for these sessions is always positive and what is appreciated is the ability to be flexible and adapt to the needs and level of the group and to where the groups take us. These sessions can be for adults or adolescents, depending on need and focus.
He was done this work with LGBT+ groups, Traveller organisations, schools and PRUs, Universities, Trainee & Qualified Therapists, local community groups, School staff (inset days), Activist groups and more.
